For those that are searching for a better deal, energy comparison sites are often the go-to source of information but can these sites really find you the best deal? Many of the consumers we speak to are hesitant to look for a better deal, despite Australian’s spending an estimated $1.2 billion more on energy bills than they should. Energy comparison sites offer consumers a simple way to rank retailers, but you may get a different result on each site. Some sites don’t have all of the available retailers listed and so can’t give a comprehensive comparison. Some sites use algorithms that. retailers paying higher commissions for higher listings and some rank by value or services offered rather than by cost. The government run site,
Energy Made Easy, offers an impartial, non-profit driven comparison but this site only lists the generally available offers from each retailer so you may miss out on comparing any packages or special offers. So what is the best way to compare your energy plan? Simply take a copy of your current bill and search for the cents per kWh rate and the daily service fee after any discounts you are receiving. You can then shop around online or by calling your preferred retailers. Energy comparison sites can quickly give you a list of retailers ranked by your priorities, but they don’t list all options and some sites allow retailers to pay more for a higher listing.
